BULA BABY!!!

How could I be so close and not make a stop (or 3.5 weeks) over in Fiji!!!!  I landed in the tiny Nadi Airport and took a 50 cent open air bus ride to New Town, a little area outside the airport, made mostly of cheap hostels and full of backpackers planning their adventures in Fiji.

Could be in my top 10 hardest moments from this trip- getting my backpacks through the tiny bus door and up the two steepest steps of this bus in 100 degrees with like 30 Fijians staring at me and finding no place to sit or turn around!

After a week of exploring Nadi and struggling to find a budget friendly way to get to the Northern and Western islands (Fiji is made up of 250 islands) I decided on a 5 hour bus trip Southeast to Suva, the capital city, to see the coral coast and get away from the touristy vibe of New Town.  I rode the 5 hours with a very friendly local woman who filled me in on traditional communal living, Fiji's rugby ranking (they had just beat the US last night), pointed out the best beaches, traditional thatched houses and her thoughts on the relations between the "Fijians" and "Fijians of Indian descent".

I was pretty surprised to see such an Indian presence in Fiji! Most Indo-Fijians are the descendants of indentured laborers from the late 1800s that were sent over to work for the British in sugar can fields and sugars mills.

And then it was off to live on the Islands off Fiji's main Island for the next 14 days!!!
